I think about 90% of peoples problems with AI would go away if it wasnt being controlled by the absolute worst people for the absolute worst reasons, at the expense of everyone, while stealing everything….

LLMs are good tools, but anything these corporations do with it is the product of massive theft and exploitation and thats why so many people have such an averse reaction to it.

Take away the capitalism-demands-infinite-growth motive to LLMs and instead of data centers being build off a massive pyramid scheme of IOUs you’d have open community projects refining LLMs to make them more efficient and less demanding, but that’s not what drives hardware sales for Nvidia, so its not what the market wants.

I do think whenever this whole AI Bubble does pop we will end up with some very legit and useful applications for LLMs. They just wont be the sort of uses you’d be able to put directly into production without an amount of human oversight equal or greater to the amount of money you’d save by “eliminating” lower skilled workers. Like maybe you can hire less people maybe, but the people you do need will be much more expensive.

I’m not at all saying this makes LLMs worth paying for, in fact the only reason I even use Gemini over anything is because unlike similar tools it works for free and more over I was able to buy a google account on the darknet with a year of access to their ProAI for under $10 (none of which goes to google, its a free student account made by someone in someplace like Pakistan or Nigeria).

Sidenote: I love that phrase “Do the needful”, I use it all the time with LLMs, but I’ve never in my life used it with humans. To me it sounds sort of rude (like “Just get it done damn it!”), but I don’t care about being rude to a clanker.

Putting this up front, I am NOT pro-AI… I’m just lazy and LLMs are very useful if you are lazy.

This is so far one of the best uses for #LLMs i’ve found, having it figure out the mess of issues that come up when attempting to compile random shit I don’t have the time nor desire to troubleshoot myself.

Here is an example, I am checking out Nostr clients and this one called gossip has an AUR package, but it failed in building for some reason and ran into multiple issues some of which i could probably have figured out myself but others I’d have just given up on and probably written off even trying the software. I told GeminiCLI

do the needful to complete the compilation and creating of package for gossip nostr client archlinux package https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gossip

So it does what’s needed and solves each issue as it comes up. So far I’m 2 for 2 with fixing AUR packages this way.

I am really digging #Nostr but man, if you though having to pick a host instance on Fedi was complicated, its nothing compared to the clusterfuck of apps and services that you’ll find on Nostr.

If any other users have suggestions on clients to check out, or users to follow I’m all ears. So far I’ve deployed my own relay, setup my own instance of Primal, Nostrudle and Floatilla. I’m using Amethyst on mobile which is my favorite so far.

Today I learned how to backup my entire VPS disk image with dd over ssh. The plan is to then boot it in qemu for testing and breaking things.

Its a fun distraction for them to larp as if they’re really “debating” anything. What we really need is competency testing, both to hold office or even to vote for who gets in office. You need to pass an exam just to be able to LEARN how to drive, why is it less important when deciding on who to let “Drive” our government. If you don’t know basic facts like there are 3 branches of government, you shouldn’t be entitled to a vote.

BTW Illegals already can’t vote, even if we gave every benefit of every doubt and assume every single one of them votes democrat (they dont, surprised pikachu for all the conservative husbands losing their mail order brides), the numbers don’t add up to anything remotely significant to matter. But they’ll spend hours “fighting” about this as if it matters.
