The funniest thing is that there’s no unpathetic version of what happened to Musk. Either he got his ass beat by a five year old or this limp dick fifth rate Temu version of Toht from Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Any way you spin it it’s bitch thirty for Ketamine Clyde. 😂😂😂
Of course right after we get a huge influx of new users the server starts acting up again… so far as i can tell unrelated to the amount of new users. Seems like it might have been either slskd or nfs that had a memory leak . I turned both of as the most likely culprits for now.
i really hope i dont have to go back to using samba.
I tried to update funkwhale to 2.0 alpha, it was a glorious failure and there’s no reverting back because i realized too late that the files that where supposed to be backed up, where in fact not backed up at all.
You know that quote “fortune favors the bold”… The guy who its quoting, he died being bold, its not really the inspirational quote most people take it for, its more about just trying even when you know you’re likely to fail, at least that’s my take.
My point is, I’m a very bold sysadmin, and this will probably not be the last time something breaks, everything is a learning experience.
@Zergling_man I really would love to run XMPP again but no one i interact with really uses it. I miss when i could run everything through Pidgin or weechat, but these days if you want to bridge across networks matrix is pretty much the only option that works with all of them (ie discord, slack, “messenger”, etc)
The more people who actually engage with me over my dislike of the #fedipact, the more clear it is that very few people actually understand how activitypub and the internet in general actually work.
I get that a lot of you are young and don’t remember the days when all the 1337 needs user IRC bridges for everything, but seriously, do some god damn research and learn what a walled garden is, then learn what a bridge is,
Then tell me why you want to be a gate keeping bastard instead of actually getting peeps to LEAVE META The point is to make meta’s service worth less to users who discover a truely decentralized, ad free, censorship resistant alternative, that yeah, they can also post to the stragglers on threads from if they want, WHY THE FUCK NOT?
Honestly thinking of setting up multiple federated mastodon instances just to keep trolling threads and see what i can get away with… wish pleroma had better support for it, I love this interface but i guess they hard coded a block on threads or something because it absolutely refuses to let me directly tag threads users.
If anyone’s blocking or defederating me because I said I want @zuck to kill himself… would “UN_ALIVING” be a better term for you…?
Do you like how censorship has changed the way we talk… the way we self censor so we can still speak freely and have our posts visible.
FUCK-THAT-SHIT
I think even if no one agrees with my perspective, I’m just going to try and find ways to fuck with #meta from my own instance, until THEY defederate from ME
They probably won’t even notice, but I’d like to see what kind of things i can get away with doing to antagonize @zuck@threads.net who is federated currently.
I honestly did not really give #fedipact much thought until people started trying to claim im supporting meta by pointing out the flaws in it. Like how incredibly bad faith do you have to be to make a strawman like that for your argument to work.
I think overall i support the sentiment of it, i just think the implementation and stated reasons are very gate keepy and doesn’t really help the people they supposedly care about who they claim get treated so poorly on other platforms. It seems like victim blaming to hold it against people for not being able to leave #meta.
FUCK META, I want them to die a horrible death that results in mark zuckerberg killing himself after losing his entire fortune and his children die in destitution. Speaking of difficulty moderating, I think it’d be pretty hilarious if I Tagged @zuck@threads.net And he ended up seeing it but can’t take down my post or ban me because I run my own instance.
Huge shoutout to people like @georgetakei @georgetakei@threads.com
For being accessible on both and helping to bring more awareness to Mastodon… thats how you get people off #meta, by meeting them where they are and leading by example.
How many of you guys support blocking George Takei for being on threads I wonder…
What even is this point? Marginalized communities exist on #meta in huge numbers, #Fedipact only futher alienates those people who may otherwise be open to moving platforms if not for large portions of fediverse blocking the one platform where all their currently existing friends and communities already exist.
try being trans and on facebook, having a list of common suicide methods sent to you by a bigot, and reporting it. they’ll do goddamn nothing. a real, personal, and depressingly common example
So the solution is for the majority of trans people on facebook to just not know about fediverse at all? Or do people think the existence of Mastodon and how to use common knowledge to your average non-tech savy (trans)person and they are just choosing to stay on a platform that lets them be harassed?
If #meta threads is such a hostile place for marginalized people, why aren’t we brigadding posts on threads to drown out the bigots and show support for those who need it.
No one would argue meta isn’t pure evil, but that’s where people are. unfortunately not everyone is able to figure out how to join the fediverse, and many people are only on meta’s platforms because thats where the people they communicate with are.
It’s wrong to hold the negative actions of a company that is essentially holding everyone’s friends hostage (ie: they won’t have a way of contacting them outside of meta platfoms) against the people being kept hostage.
@tokyo_0 #Fedipact just going to start with these directly
So is moderating any online community or fedi instance with only volunteers. You sometimes end up with fascist sypathizers as mods for example , Generally speaking “decentalized” and “well moderated” don’t co-exist… I mean, one can hope for a good balance, but if people want to misbehave they have ways of getting around moderation even on very strict platforms.
@tokyo_0 Okay bro, so why are you not linking me to anything? My instance is for me alone because that’s how i ensure what little control i do have on my data and if i want to stop having it be public I can literally just push a button.
My Instance is barely a month old, so I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye on the #fedipact and #fediblock threads and try to figure for myself out how its different from just #gatekeeping low info/ non tech savvy folks out of the fediverse.
@tokyo_0 You aren’t even making sense bro, what “pro meta talking points” are you talking about, Im not pro meta so maybe work on your reading comprehension a bit before you go engaging with people on topics you know next to nothing about.
“No one is obliged to answer you more fully”
Translation: “I’m not able to give a real answer so i’ll just use a cop out excuse instead”
Maybe just let the adults speak next time, since you aren’t an admin and you seem to have no idea how any of this stuff actually works. Your vibes based assessment isn’t needed.
If anyone who actually admins a fedi instance has more info about how #fedipact applies to instances and how we can better recognize AI/Spam and other problematic instances, I’m all ears.
@tokyo_0 I understand you disagree with letting meta do it, but my point is that they, and many other unknown actors are actively going to harvest everything they can, Fedi Posts are public, you can run a mastodon instance that doesnt even interact except to harvest data and it would not be noticed. Meta and other companies actively ignore the law and have the money and lawyers they need to not face any consequences for doing so… THe threat is not to just the fediverse but the entire internet and its not from just Meta its from Google, Amazon, Microsoft and other mega-corps that are LIERALLY above the law (as demonstrated by them constantly breaking laws and paying fines… do they even actually pay these fines? I dont honestly know how to check, maybe they just endlessly appeal and delay things).
I was hoping you’d have more then just a vague “Data harvesting is quickly spotted by admins who monitor traffic. “, I’m an admin and I follow many other admins, I have not seen any major discussion or posting along the lines of “mastodon instance XYZ is harvesting data and should be defederated” or “the instance of ABC is full of nothing but bots and should be blocked”
I have seen instances that are openly okay with AI Art an AI posts NOT being being objected to sigmoid.social for example, is full of bots and AI garbage, but its not really a well known instance so no one cares.
I’m not saying we should welcome them with open arms, I’m just saying the idea of #fedipact is not overall going to solve the problems it purports to solve, at least not so long as its hyper focused on just blacklisting a single company’s single public fedi-connection… what about BlueSky and bridgySky, why isnt everyone as hostile to them I wonder?
I think there are better ways to fight this battle, the current method of just ignorning them will not hinder Meta or the others in the slightest.
how? Could you give me an example of how you’d expect a data harvesting instance to be noticed, can you point to any examples of already existing ones (of which there are several) that the community has noticed?
Illegal where? And do you realize we’re talking about a multinational billion dollar corporations that does “AI”. I don’t know if you noticed, but they aren’t exactly that concerned about “legality” these days when it comes to harvesting data. At best they’d pay a fine if the got caught, then lobby governments to make what they did legal.
I despise meta and everything they do, but for my fellow humans, you have to meet people where they are sometimes, not everyone has the same interests or concerns, not everyone is as educated about the issues with meta as you are.
#Fedipact Is just gate keeping. Now maybe there are other justifications you have for wanting to gate keep, but its not stopping anyone from data harvesting off the fediverse.
I’m just thinking, what can we do to make #meta #threads regret even trying to federate? How can we take advantage of this situation from a hacker/activist perspective, but with the ruthlessness of a capitalist. Embrace the federation, extend it by introducing something cool that threads cant do (like ad free content, a better UI, less censorship, etc), and then by the time they realize OH SHIT we better stop federating, enough of their users might be willing to jump ship the next time they get some 30 second unskippable add thrown in their meta feed thats already full of mostly AI slop posting.
Seem like a better strategy then just ignoring them. 🤷
