No one would argue meta isnβt pure evil, but thatβs where people are. unfortunately not everyone is able to figure out how to join the fediverse, and many people are only on metaβs platforms because thats where the people they communicate with are.
Itβs wrong to hold the negative actions of a company that is essentially holding everyoneβs friends hostage (ie: they wonβt have a way of contacting them outside of meta platfoms) against the people being kept hostage.
Iβm just thinking, what can we do to make #meta #threads regret even trying to federate? How can we take advantage of this situation from a hacker/activist perspective, but with the ruthlessness of a capitalist. Embrace the federation, extend it by introducing something cool that threads cant do (like ad free content, a better UI, less censorship, etc), and then by the time they realize OH SHIT we better stop federating, enough of their users might be willing to jump ship the next time they get some 30 second unskippable add thrown in their meta feed thats already full of mostly AI slop posting.
Seem like a better strategy then just ignoring them. π€·
The main flaw i see with #fedipact logic is: if meta was really more of a threat to Fedi then Fedi is to #Meta, why wouldnt βProject92β or whatever just start a covert instance runnin mastodon on a random domain name unaffiliated with meta (at least on the surface level) and just harvest all the data they want that way?
I just donβt see that much of a harmful impact in harvesting data that is already public, i get sending a message that we dont want corpos on #fediverse, but maybe we should start considering the harm Fedi can do to meta by using the ole βembrace, extend, extinguishβ route as a sort of uno reverse card and out extend the corporations for once.
Just doing this for testing purposes but It seems like #federation isnβt really a thing on #threads. Someone please correct me if Iβm wrong but I see no way of viewing, following, or interacting with non-threads users from the threads website. I can technically follow threads users from mastodon, but they canβt follow back or even know that im following them.
I guess i really donβt know why i expected it to be more than a performative PR stunt, but it sure seems like even #meta doesnt want people interacting because, if they did then theyβd know they could leave.
Kinda makes me rethink the whole #fedipact thingβ¦ like if the fedi hadnβt completely walled off from them and instead embraced the idea, we might have ended up actually costing meta users instead of just allowing them to stay a walled garden.
Tempest Rising implements the RTS mechanics of Command and Conquer beautifully. If you are looking for a new C&C game this is most definitely it!
Who pays for these ridiculous services? I bet companies like this pretty much depend on people who forget they had auto-renew on.
Tried and failed to run Doom Dark Ages on Debian, i guess drivers are too old in stable backports and the ones in testing just crashed the game.
Gave Pop!OS a try mainly because it had nvidia support out of the box, might keep it IDK.
βNo I donβt work in cyber security, Iβm the reason other people work in cyber security.β
Had an fun conversation on my ride home today with someone who was studying to get into cybersec, made me realize need to get over avoiding telling people iβm a hacker.
Its like, IFKYK, and if you donβt then it probably doesnt matter what you think i do anyway.
Thatβs how its done! Fuck this genocide enabling traitor!
Recently i noticed a problem with #Vivaldi automatically adjusting the volume of youtube videos. Iβm not sure if its related to the media controls tray icon that pops up but if i scroll up or down on that the volume will changes for the media vivaldi is playing, it doesnt seem to save this setting though and re-visits to the same video will result in the volume going to whatever vivaldi originally decided it liked.
This setting will default to sometimes 30%, sometimes 50% and sometimes 80%, i canβt understand where its getting to decide what level it chooses for a given video although it might have to do with the overall loudness of the video (louder videos get set to 30%, quieter βtalkingβ videos might get 80%)
What is this setting called, where do i find it, and how can i turn it off?
My last AliExpress order made it through customs and arrived today, although half of the order was canceled before it even shipped, but the important stuff made it.
Iβm pretty happy with the results here. Registrations are open on everything at the moment if anyone wants to try them, most donβt even require creating an account.
Remember when you used to have all your favorite music stored on one little device that had less memory then your current phone has now, and then you got suckered into paying for the βconvenienceβ of a spotify subcription because hey its all there and one less thing to have to carry around, plus oh boy do you get to discover great new artists on thereβ¦ of course those artists donβt earn shit from your βdiscoveringβ them that way but hey βGive me convenience or Give me Deathβ, AMIRITE?
Many people arenβt aware that spotify was created on the basis of βeasier to ask forgiveness then permissionβ and because they had the right amount of money and the right old white dudes investing they got a free pass to just steal music using the very methods theyβd previously fought so hard to try and stop.
FunkWhale is the spiritual successor to the now long gone and mostly forgotten βGrooveSharkβ which was Spotifyβs biggest competitor NOT backed by the major label investors doing EXACTLY the same thing as them and bringing music to the people, only difference was content on grooveshark was actually uploaded by the users from their own collections, oh and of course grooveshark didnt have the backing of rich venture capitalists.
Spotify does not deserve your money everything on it can be downloaded in better quality on other services anyway so even if you are the sort of lawful good person who pays for things, youβll get a much better deal from Tidal, Deezer, or even YouTube Music.
