GravityWell.xYz Update;

I now suspect the Realtek NIC i added might be the issue and the reason freezes are infrequent is that they happen under only heavy connection loads (more then IPerf3 can produce)

After ruling out nearly everything else (Memtest Passed, BIOS updated, ), I switched from a 2.5G NIC to the onboard 1Gb NIC. I’ve performed extensive stress testing on CPU, GPU, and RAID under full load but couldn’t intentionally trigger a freeze. The server has been stable for ~24 hours.

I just re-enabled Jellyfin. If it stays up with the slower NIC, I’ll stick with 1Gb for now due to high hardware prices.

Well this is not so great, think jellyfin itself is whats causing instability on the (older) media server 😭 the system stays up without problems if I keep all the services off but with jfin running it ends up crashing within some hours. My best guess is this happens due to the large size of the library.

I just don’t really see how a docker could be doing that, esp since its not spiking CPU or mem usage when it happens… Possibly its a power thing and it happens when the fin tries to do some sort of scan of the entire library that triggers a surge but IDK.

passed memtest, updated bios, did all the things, had it stable and runing for like 2 days, then i turned docker and jellyfin back on, next morning i get up to it frozen… 🀦

For now please use Jelly.Throbbing.Click which is on different hardware and has a smaller library (seerr is also setup for requests there).

I’ve been using Linux for 25+ years and I still use nano over vim or anything else.

Well the BIOS update didnt end up fixing things, several more troubleshooting steps later its looking like either CPU or motherboard is the issue.

Really hoping its the CPU not the mobo, it would be much cheaper/easier to get a new CPU for an AM4, DDR4 system

Extracted all my audiobooks from Audible and de-DRMed them in about 10 minutes this afternoon. Now I have all the digital book material I ever bought from Amazon in formats I can control.

I’m married but I think marriage is stupid as a tradition and legal concept. Aside from the problematic origins and historical context of it, the legal aspects of a β€œcivil union” where you can have actual shared accounts and file taxes jointly and such, those are things you can do as a corporation too. I think we should abolish all marriage and replace it with Corporate Partnerships, also this shouldn’t be limited to just one partner and it should also be allowed to buy and shell shares in stock for a marriage.

Today I learned that in @librewolf I can type "translate" in the URL bar and get to a text translation UI.

This is powered by a local model and part of the Firefox translation thingy. I guess it must work the same way in Firefox?

Anyway, this is great. Local model, pretty solid translations, now possible to use directly to translate copy-pasted text snippets, not just text on a website.

Local models will eat Big AI's cake.

(usual caveats apply, such translations are always imperfect!)

well looks like bios updates didn’t fix things, memtest just ran over night 2 complete passes across 64gb… So its not the bios, its not the ram, the GPU is fine and barely even being used anyway.

Now celebrating 48 hours of uptime on the media server that was previously kernel panicing daily for months. Turns out this was due to a bios issue, possibly in combination with other things, but for sure the bios update seems to have fixed it.

After troubleshooting damn near every other thing including memtest over night, I finally got around to looking into a bios update, of which there had been several betas and a stable release since i last updated mine only a year ago.

Finally got around to setting up vault warden, I didn’t previously feel like i had the confidence to host my own password sync service, but it seems like a better option then syncthing, and even though I really like BitWarden, the warning signs are there that its time to start moving to something that cant be taken away be some corp.

This one service is gonna be private tho, because i do not want that kind of responsibility even as a backup provider for other people’s password vaults.

Looks like there was a BIOS update for my server just 2 months ago, along with a bunch of beta releases between the last time i updated in 2024 and now. Heres to hoping it magically fixes the kernel panics ive been having

I can’t help but laugh when i see ads that actually admit they’re β€œgenerated with AI”, because you know they would rather not, but they’re still (justifiably) unsure if it might end up creating something embarrassing or offensive.

I honestly think all advertising will be AI generated within a few years, few industries are as soulless then the advertising industry, human workers are just dead weight.
