@Quasit

I assume you're not following them (might be worth checking by clicking their name to see their profile page).

If you're not following them, they might be using a hashtag that you're following. You can check this by clicking each tag at the bottom fo their posts until you find one you follow.

As MHowell said, you can mute or block the account if it keeps turning up and you don't want to see it by clicking ... at the bottom of one of its posts and selecting mute or block.

@FediTips Thanks! I'm not following them, but they're being boosted by an account I follow. That seems to be an automated thing; the account auto-boosts anything with certain hashtags.

I'd rather not mute the boosting account, but if the spamming account keeps showing up in my feed I'm going to mute them for sure!

Ahhhh okay, that makes sense.

A third option is to mute that account's boosts, but that would stop you seeing anything they boost. More about this option at https://fedi.tips/blocking-and-muting-on-the-fediverse/#JustBoosts

@Quasit @FediTips Hi, this seems to be related to a bot that syncs youtube videos on my peertube instance and I’d like to know a bit more about what happened here. What is the boosting account and hashtag it was for?

The flood of posts was because a channel with a lot of old videos was being imported. I wasn’t even aware these things show up on non-peertube instances until i saw your comment about blocking the mirror account. The video descriptions and hashtags they include are direct from their original authors descriptions on youtube.

I’m not sure if there is anything much I can do to change how it auto posts videos to the peertube feed but perhaps i can block whatever auto-boosting account it was from my end so it doesn’t end up causing more problems. Sorry about all that.

As I recall the boosting account was called "The Humor Channel", but when I went back the name had become "MirrorMirror". The guy they were boosting was some comedian named Steve Hofstetter, and it was all videos from PeerTube.

Correction, it's "HumourChannel". MirrorMirror is a different account that posted at least one PeerTube video by the guy. The spamming has died down, incidentally.

@Quasit @FediTips yep, MirrorMirror is the account that syncs youtubes on my service and it was syncing a Comedian who has over 2,000 videos. I recently added additional hardware to get more videos processed at faster so this was an unintended side effect of that too. Normally videos sync as they get released on yt so it doesn’t cause any overload. It would be nice if peertube had an option to sync only a few videos at a time but currently its pretty much an all or nothing situation.
