Building AI and huge data centers in the desert is WILDLY ignorant and misdirected behavior. It's almost as if the people who build and design these things don't even consider naturally cool or water rich places. They don't even try. I mean, if ya gonna build something that needs ALL THE WATER, then why not build it where water never stops? Nevermind. Don't you dare touch the rainforest and shorelines. I don’t care if you gamble, I don’t think we should ban gambling ads specifically, but personally I can make several compelling arguments why we should ban “advertising” as a thing entirely.

I think i can say with full confidence that No one who uses RSS wants to see ads especially gambling ones. I think its safe to assume that applies to about 99% of the Fediverse too, with the other 1% being the advertisers and spambots the rest of us all despise.

@OregonLive Sure when its just some shady gambling website its obvious that its an ad, but what about if i wanted to pay for a “sponsored article” that smears a political opponent or some other such thing? at least ad #sponsored to the post or some kind of hashtag so it can be filtered out.

Are these companies actually paying for ad space IN RSS feeds, or is it just a side effect of them paying for “sponsored content” to a news org that does not feel it worth differentiating between what is an ad and what is actual news?

@Lightfighter @Quasit indeed one can pseudo-empirically ask the question "do Democratic institutions protect counties against dictatorship" and look around at countries like Italy, Hungary, Britain, and Israel to see that they do not.

Liberals love to ask anarchists "but how would your society of free association ever prevent a dictator from rising to power? It's an excellent question that every person should be able to try to answer about their favorite political system, but it seems the liberals have forgotten to ask it about theirs. We can see right now in very fine detail exactly how the "checks and balances" can be systematically dismantled, sidestepped, or just ignored. Even if the system eventually reins Trump in, its failure to stop any of his worst impulses before they happened makes it feel like a very hollow sort of success. Alex Pretti doesn't benefit from a (very hypothetical at this point) swing back towards a less corrupt and fascist system.
