The internet was not a mistake
Social media was not a mistake

Allowing Corporations to dictate and control both of these things was the mistake.

The Electricity Bill Nobody Can Pay:The Mathematics of an AI Collapse

Archived Link

This is exactly why i encourage everyone, even the β€œhaters” to just use the fuck out of all these AI companies, keep lighting their money on fire with stupid pointless slop, when it all crashes and burns we’ll have some really decent LOCAL LLMs that can run on a cell phone if you want them to.

β€œThe math doesn’t work. It has never worked. It will never work.

The free tier era of AI is ending. Not because the technology failed, but because physics and economics are unyielding.

When it ends, we’ll face a choice: pay $20–40/month for closed models, or pay $200–400/year to run open models ourselves.

The math suggests most people will choose the latter. Not out of ideological preference, but because it’s 10–50x cheaper.

The $600 billion bet was that AI could be a consumer product at scale. The electricity bill alone proves it can’t be β€” at least not as a free service.

We have about 12–18 months before the math forces everyone’s hand.”

Really silly how tidal keeps blocking some of the VPN servers I use, I just end up switching to soulseek instead and realizing its way better.

So sick of robinhood trying to push this β€œprediction market’ bullshit. Got a fucking push notification to remind me that i can bet on some fucking sports game. I was thinking there must be an option to self-exclude in the app because thats supposedly a legal requirement for all casinos, but not for β€œprediction markets”

I don’t have a gambling problem personally I just thought it would be a good way to avoid some ads.

Watching creators beg youtube to reinstate their accounts is like watching a domestic abuse victim beg their abuser to take them back.

Too bad its all about ad revenue these days for most people, I feel like we could do a lot better then google if people just put slightly more effort into supporting alternatives, that’s why I continue to mirror youtube channels on my peertube instance (and you can too if you want).

I understand why some corpos are lazy and just use some third party service that blocks all VPNs, but if you’re going to do that an also providing a service in which i need to give you money, you could at least TELL ME with a proper fucking error message.

Its like the people who work in fraud prevention think security by obscurity is a useful tactic. I don’t NEED an error message to figure out whats going on and Im not even trying to do fraud, If someone is actually a professional fraudster I’m pretty sure they’ll know where to buy residential proxies.

The reason I approve damn near every request that gets submitted on the GravityWell.xYz Jellyfin, even ones I don’t like such as trashy TV or whatever dogshit Matt Walsh puts out, is because I’d rather anyone who is curious about those things watch them in a way that provides no revenue to the people who produce such garbage.

Also I don’t mean this as an insult to people who enjoy trash TV. I myself am a big fan of some seriously trashy shows, we all have our vices, I just want to deprive corporate media cartels of as much money as possible.

Documenting the many failures of #Mozilla part 1 of ???

In 2015 #Firefox began including the service now defunct addon/service β€œpocket” as an integrated add-on, the first add-on to ever be bundled with their browser up to this point.

This decision baffled many users at the time including myself. Many wondered why such a niche service was given such consideration ahead of much more desirable addons such as ublock or adblockplus.

In hindsight we know this is because bundling such adblockers would result in a near complete loss of funding for the project from google, with little hope of another advertiser like microsoft being interested in taking over.

Look I get it, you’re lazy af, but guys you really shouldnt be keeping your entire digital identity with any single entity. Just think about this for a minute, what happens if you wake up tomorrow and your AppleID, or Google, or Microsoft, or whatever it is you have 90% of your stuff saved on decided to lock you out, would that be more or less of a hassle to deal with then taking the time to spread things out and setup backups for things that are important to you.

I’m the laziest mfer there is and I self host almost everything, If my lazy stoner ass can figure out that much then i think you as a functioning adult should be able to figure out how to master basic things like having a second email and a physical drive for backups that isn’t on β€œthe cloud”… this is like basic stuff people. Either that or don’t complain when you get smashed by the corporate ban hammer.

Really you should just stop using corporate services period if you have any sort of ethical consideration into the services you use (paid or not) then you should be avoiding Microsoft, Apple, Meta, Google, all of these tech companies… go with small ones like Tuta or ctemplar.com or riseup.net. Avoid using services that try to be all-in-one like proton, or if you do use such services dont use the same one for both a VPN and Email.

I’m so sick of every site and service I spend money on telling me how much i β€œSAVED” by using them. I didn’t save shit, You made a sale because you had the cheapest price and no other reason, if i could get it literally anywhere else for cheaper, I would have.

Even worse is when its delivery apps and they try to gas light you into thinking you’re saving money by having a subscription to them, when the apps themselves are directly responsible for everything having prices inflated by like 100% on top of all the bullshit fees they decided they could slap on…. but yeah keep reminding me how I’m β€œsaving” $2 on my order by paying you $6 a fucking month for the privilege.

β€œI can’t help but feel like Vince Gilligan is giving women their own version of Walter White with Carol, to cheer as an antihero while wildly misunderstanding the point of the character the way dudes did with Walter. I keep watching Pluribus and trying to honestly assess how I’d feel if she were a man. But I’m pretty sure, if she was a man, I wouldn’t bother watching it at all.

Like, am I the only one who is driven crazy by her total lack of curiosity? Or trying literally anything that’s not just shouting at people who are being very nice to her and trying to help her at every turn? Does it not occur to her to ask them: listen, if this is so great, why don’t you reverse the process on just one single person and let them tell me so themselves, if it’s reversible? If one person became an individual again and said to me β€œShit, no, man, it’s amazing,” even if I didn’t choose to do it myself, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt.

But as it stands, she sounds kinda like an antivaxxer, and it worries me that people are regarding that as something brave and iconoclastic, when I have a feeling that Gilligan really is setting her up to be a monster like Walter was - to splash around in those same waters.”

Yikes!

β€œ A mistake in Mozilla’s signing infrastructure previously disabled NoScript and all other Firefox extensions signed by Mozilla in Tor Browser. Because NoScript enforces the higher security levels, this single point of failure compromised privacy for millions of users. The solution: host NoScript yourself, sign it yourself, update it yourself. Version 13.5.2.1984 equals AMO’s 13.5.2 in functionality, but now the Tor Project controls the entire update pipeline without waiting for Mozilla.”

Peertube supports syncing channels with youtube. EWU is on there already but if you have other channels youd like to see on peertube you can also set them up yourself.

I wrote a short how to for it here https://lemmy.world/post/39621439

If we’re just saying things we thing might be good for business;

Personally I think Alex Karp should be tortured before his execution without a trial, so he can first retract his support of war crimes, before having his head removed with a very dull knife.

I think that would do a lot of good for the anti-fascism and anti-oligarchy industry.

And to answer my own questions:

9months to 2 years to build data centers in china.

https://www.datacenter-asia.com/blog/how-long-does-it-take-to-build-a-data-center/

He was probably thinking of this claim about hospitals: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/china-hospital-10-days/

Equating β€œdata centers” with hosptials, as if they are in any way the same… This really begs the question, why did he not compare to building data centers in china, is it perhaps because they take just as long regardless of the location because data centers are a lot more complicated then hospitals (and hospitals are just one of the many critical services that actually depend on datacenters these days)

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: β€œData centers take about 3 years to construct in the U.S., while in China β€˜they can build a hospital in a weekend’”
